Mt. Kanchenjunga is the world’s 3rd highest and 2nd tallest of all the peaks in Nepal Himalayas. Mt. Kanchenjunga towers high at 8,586 m / 28, 169 feet.
The Kanchenjunga original name is ‘Kanchendzonga’ meaning five jewels related to its adjoining peaks. The name is derived from Tibetan language,
Mt. Kanchenjunga straddles the borders between Nepal and Sikkim, India.
It was first submitted by the British Expeditions on May 25th, 1955 led by legendary late Sir George Band. From then on mountaineers and trekkers frequently visit this isolated and remote high country of eastern Nepal.

Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek takes you far beyond the massive Nepal Himalayas to the high country of Taplejung. The one and only adventure that leads you to both base camps of all 8,000 meters’ mountain base camps.

An exciting and interesting adventure to experience, the route of this trek involves scenic and exciting drives both ways. The journey begins from the low warm Terai belt of Eastern Nepal heading towards cooler hills of Ilam.

A famous and renowned country with sea of Tea Gardens in the shadow ofMt. Kanchenjunga. The walk starts after the large town of Taplejung heading due north east towards sheer mountain wilderness.The trek follows through lovely small farm villages across streams and into enchanting woodland of tall rhododendrons and pine trees.

The first phase of the adventure takes you to explore Mt. Kanchenjunga South Base Camp at Tseram and Oktang Glaciers. After a wonderful moment around the southern sides of Mt. Kanchenjunga, adventure continues traversing three passes. The Mirgin-La, Tamo-La and Selele-La of above 3,000 m to 4,250 meters pass. From these three passes enjoy stunning views of Kanchenjunga, Makalu as far as towards Mt. Everest.

Adventure slowly leads you to the northern region of Kanchenjunga at the mountain lovely village of Ghunsa and Khambachen.The walk proceeds further north east with close views of Jannu Himal, as you enter Kanchenjunga North Base Camp.

From the last settlement of Lhonak reaches you to a dramatic high country close within the North Face of Mt. Kanchenjunga. Stand on the highest spot of the adventure surrounded by an array of towering Snow Mountains.

After a wonderful time and experience completing the walks to both South and North Kanchenjunga Base Camps. The journey leads you to lovely areas of northern areas of Taplejung and Kanchenjunga regions.

The walk follows through nice farm villages reaching towards mid-hills at Suketar for an exciting drive to low warm Terai. Reaching the sub-tropical areas and town of Eastern Nepal at Bhadrapur for scenic flight back to Kathmandu.After an enjoyable and marvelous experience on Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to a hotel

On arrival at Kathmandu and Nepal Intenational Airport, after visa formalities, and claiming the baggage. Outside the exit terminal our staff and guide receives you for a short transfer to the hotel. After getting refreshed at the hotel, then join with other members of Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek for a briefing.

Briefing is done by our guide, group leader with full information of the treks, including hotels in Kathmandu. Local cultures with do’s and don’ts.
In the evening a lovely dinner and introduction to Nepali foods and culture.

Day 2: Tour of Kathmandu heritage sites of great interest

Moning after breakfast, our city guide takes you on a tour around thenworld heritage sites within Kathmandu city. After an exciting and interesting tour back to the hotel, preparation and packing for trekking.

Non-essential clothing and items not required for treks, can be stored in the Hotel or with Kirat Society Adventure.

Day 3: Fly Kathmandu to Bhadrapur drive to Ganesh Chowk approx.1, 440 m -07-8 hour’s flight and drive. O/N local Lodge

Transfer for moning flight to Bhadrapur airport, located Nepal Far Easten low-land of Terai belt. During flight enjoy the Himalayan panorama with an unparalleled series of peaks. The views of Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse and Mt. Makalu with Mt. Kanchenjunga. Finally, the plane lands at Bhadrapur airport, received by our guide and trekking staff. From the airport, on a four-wheel drive or similar vehicle. An exciting interesting drive leads through towns and farm villages, heading North East towards winding green hills. Reaching Ilam area, famous for its large tea plantation, lined with pine and fir tree lines.
The air gets cooler as the drive reaches a small town at Ganesh Chowk past Phidim for ovenight stop amidst tea-gardens. An exciting place to observe the local cultures of Easten Nepal, in the backdrop of Mt. Kanchenjunga.

Day 4: Drive to Banketar 4 hours and trek to Khewang 1,630 m -02 hrs O/N Lodge

From Ganesh Chowk near Phidim, a few hours’ drive to the starting point of the trek at Khewang past Suketar, within the district of Taplejung.
The largest and main town around Kanchenjunga and easten region of Nepal. The drive leads on a rough bumpy dirt track to Banketar through Suketar, a small town. Then start few hours walk to ovenight stop at Khewang, a nice small farm village in the comfort of a nice and simple lodge

Day 5: Trek to Sherpa-Gaon 2,140 m. 6-7 hours trek O/N Basic Homestay or Camp

Enjoy the second day of pleasant walk downhill past several farm villages, inhabited by Hindu hill tribes. A mix of Brahmins, Chettries and Kirat people known as Rai and Limbu. The walk then leads to Tembawa, having a short refreshing rest, continuing with a long descent to Pokora village.nn nnThe trail leads over a suspension bridge, the walk follows with a steep climb to Kunjari, a small settlement. From here a few hours walks to Kande Bhanjyang, as the walk continues to a small village of Loppoding, from here trail leads ups and downhill to Fun-Fun, a pleasant resting spot for travelers.
From this tranquil spot, enjoy views of Khumbukana, Yarlung and Kanchenjunga peaks. The walk continues downhill to Yang pang, a small farm area, and climbnfor an hour to Phompe Danda. The climb continues towards Sherpa Gaon for ovenight stops in a lovely Sherpa Gaon / village. A moderate size farm settlement. This will be the last permanent village of the Sherpa.

Day 6: Trek to Lasiya Bhanjyang, 3415m, 5 hours. O/N Lodge

From Sherpa Gaon / village, moning trek follows Kabeli Khola, crossing over a tributary of Omje Khola. The climb starts on a steep hill to Dhupi Bhanjyang, a high grassy ridge top. It is also called Lashe Tham or Bhanjyang for ovenight stops near Chitre village.

Day 7: Trek to Tseram 3,770 m - 05 hrs

After a pleasant ovenight stay at Lasiya Bhanjyang, moning trek leads closer towards our first destination to Kanchenjunga South Base Camp.
The trail follows Ramite Bhanjyang and then climbs for a few hours amidst magnolias, rhododendron and bamboo forest to Ramite.

An isolated place with a single small stone hut, from here climb leads above a ridge. The walk continues, reaching a small pond to enter a valley, covered in tall pine, rhododendron trees, reaching Wahta. A peaceful place, close to a huge rock shaped like a serpent, from here walk to Tseram for ovenight camp.
Located close to the roofless caves facing views of terminal moraines fed from Yalung glacier. Includes views of Kabru (7,353 m), and Talung (7,349 m) peaks

Day 8: Rest day at Tseram for hike to Oktang near Kanchenjunga South BC

Enjoy the leisure day at Tseram, located on the midway of South and North Base Camp of Mt. Kanchenjunga. After a weeklong walk a deserving rest day, for interested people can enjoy the day. A day hike of a few hours to Oktang close towards Mt. Kanchenjunga South Base Camp. The classic and original base camp for mountaineers towards the summit of Mt. Kanchenjunga.
The first British Expedition followed this route to the summit of Mt. Kanchenjunga in 1955 by George Band and his team. The trek leads to Yalung Glacier close to the southen wall of massif Mt. Kanchenjunga. The walk offers fabulous views of Talung and Kabru peaks, after an exciting day hike back to Tseram ovenight.

Day 9: Rest Day at Tseram at leisure for short exploration

Another extra day in Tseram, for individual activities and exploring the surrounding peaceful surroundings.

Day 10: Cross Mirgin and Sele-La Pass 4,250 m and descent at 3,700 m 08 hrs. O/N in a simple lodge

Start the moning walk to a place called Yarlungbar. The trail leads to a steep climb, crossing a river and then entering into a dense forest. The walk follows an uphill path for an hour to reach close to a small pond. From here heading up cross three smaller passes of Mirgin-La, Tamo-La and Selele-La. The climb of an hour to Mirgin-La top, facing views of Kabru and Kanchenjunga massive peaks.
The walk continues down and then up to Tamo-La, and then descent with climb towards the last pass.

Traverse over Sele-La at 4,250 m high, enjoying the super panorama of Makalu, Baruntse, and Chamlang Himal. From the last pass of Sele-La, downhill to the base of the pass for ovenight stop, after a long day of treks

Day 11: Trek to Ghunsa 3,480 m - 04 hrs

Today is one of the shortest days of trekking. Moning starts with a steep descent for an hour through rhododendron and pine trees. Walk on the winding trail to Ghunsa River, crossing a small bridge. Follow the northen route of Kanchenjunga, then end the moning walk at Ghunsa village ovenight.

A nice lovely mountain village populated by some Sherpa with more Bhotias people. The indigenous mountain tribes of strong Tibetan origin and similar cultures, houses around Ghunsa built of stones and fine woods. The village has wide and neat farm land growing buck wheat and barley and some seasonal vegetables and crops. Staying either in a local simple lodge or in the comfort of a tented camp. Explore the village adoned with Buddhist religious monuments and prayer walls.

Day 12: Trek to Khambachen 4,000 m-06 hrs

From Ghunsa village, adventure continues heading towards our major andnlast destination, Kanchenjunga North base camp at Pang-Pema.

Walk follows a river with views of waterfalls, then coming across several Yak herder summer camps. The trail leads to a small forest, and then climbs to Rambuk Kharka, another pasture area for local cattle. From here cross a small glacial landslide, facing views of Khumbukana and Jannu Himal with a range of snow peaks.

The walk continues on leaving the tree lines, as the dry and arid terrains start reaching Khambachen for ovenight halt. The camp is set on a scenic valley facing Sharphu peak at 7,070 m with Mt. Jannu and Wedge peaks.

Day 13: At Khambachen for a hike near Jannu Himal

Another day in Khambachen for an exciting day hike to the base or near the majestic Jannu Himal at 7,710 m high. Enjoy the picturesque surroundings enclosed by high snow peaks and rugged mountain landscapes.

Day 14: Trek to Lhonak 4,780 m - 06 hrs

Moning walk leads above a river for an hour and then head east with downhill to a river. The climb leads over rocks and boulders entering a terminal moraine of Kanchenjunga glacier. Walk leads past Ramtang Kharka, another Yak herder summer camp, the trail continues heading across Kanchenjunga glacier.
An exciting day crossing the Kanchenjunga glacier, to Lhonak for two ovenight stops. From the camp at Lhonak enjoy fabulous views of Mera, Nepal Peak and Wedge Peak. The area around is absolutely a mountain wildeness enclosed by high towering snow peaks.

Day 15: Hike to Pang Pema at 5,150 m / 16, 896 feet at Kanchenjunga North Base Camp- 07 hours both ways

Today the hike leads to our last major destination and highlight of the adventure, an exciting walk to Pang Pema. The North Base Camp of Mt. Kanchenjunga, and the highest point. The route leads to gradual climb above a river facing views of Kirat Chuli, Nepal Peak, Taple Shikar, and Givegela Chuli.
The first part of the walk leads to a gentle high slope, and then a steep climb through boulders on a rocky path. Finally, the walk ends reaching a grassy field at Pang-Pema and the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp.

Enjoy the dramatic landscapes of massive glaciers surrounded by an array of towering peaks. Around these remote coners, chances of spotting some wildlife like a herd of blue sheep and mountain goats. After an enjoyable moment, head back to Lhonak for the last ovenight stop.

Day 16: Trek to Ghunsa 3,480 m - 08 hours

Enjoying the great exciting trek to Pang-Pema and North Kanchenjunga Base Camp. Moning walk heading on the same trail past Khambachen to Ghunsa for ovenight halt, a long and interesting day of trekking.

Day 17: Trek to Gyabla and further to Thangam 2,630 m -06 hrs. O/N Lodge

From Ghunsa our route leads on an altenative trail, visiting around the both scenic sides of Kanchenjunga beautiful country. The walk continues facing views of snow peaks past many cattle herder summer camps. Then ending the day reaching Gyabla Phedi and further walking to Thangam, a small settlement for ovenight stop.

Day 18: Trek to Sekathum approx. 1,350 m 6-7 hours’ trek. O/N Lodge

After a wonderful time around the high areas of Kanchenjunga, moning walk leads to low warm farm mid-hills. The trail follows through several smaller farm villages to Sekathum for ovenight camp, close to another nice village of Japantar

Day 19: To Ranipul, 10 minutes’ walk, drive to Suketar 2,440 m 4-5 hours. O/N Lodge

Moning an enjoyable walk, heading further lower warm areas and farm land.
The trek continues encountering many friendly villagers, heading across many spread-out villages. Slowly the day ends, reaching near Chirwa at Ranipul for an exciting drive to Suketar close to Taplejung town. Headquarters of the Taplejung district. Enjoy the comfort of a nice lodge, having time to stroll around to catch glimpse of local cultures of Easten Nepal.

Day 20: Drive to Kanyam Tea Garden, 6-7 hours’ drive. O/N Lodge

Moning on completing an adventurous trek, from Suketar, on a four-wheel drive or similar vehicles. An exciting ride on the hilly rough road to Kanyam for last ovenight on the hills of Kanchenjunga and close to Ilam Bazaar, a town famous for Tea products and its vast Tea Gardens.

Day 21: Drive to Bhadrapur - 2 hours. Fly to Kathmandu, 45 mins flight

Enjoy the last breakfast around the hills of Easten Himalayas at Kanyam and its scenic Tea-Gardens. Moning a smooth, drive leads towards low warm area of Terai and then ends on reaching at Bhadrapur airport. From here enjoy the exciting flight to Kathmandu. Arriving at Kathmandu domestic airport, a short drive back to the hotel. Aftenoon free at leisure, for individual activities and shopping souvenirs.

Day 22: Free day in Kathmandu, contingency day. O/N Hotel

Enjoy the leisure day, relaxing with fond memories of Kanchenjunga Circuit trek. Interested people can join for another tour to Patan and Bhaktapur, worth a visit not to be missed.

Day 23: International departure for homeward bound

Last day in Nepal and at Kathmandu, get ready for final departure as per your intenational flight time. Our guide and staff transfer you to the airport.

Essential Information

The best favored seasons are spring and autumn/fall. The spring begins from March to May, most days are longer with sunlight hours.

Normally the morning till mid-afternoon days are clear for views and scenic walks can get overcast late afternoon sometime.

 

Can expect snowfalls, cold mornings and in the nighttime, the mid-hills are covered with tall rhododendron, pine and juniper trees. A lively time with wildflowers are in seasonal bloom, especially the rhododendrons of various colors.

 

The next high season is autumn/fall, starts from September and ends in November. Most days are fine with crystal clear blue sky, a pleasant time for scenic walks. Days are shorter due to limited sunlight hours, cold afternoons, and nights till morning time. Expect snowfall sometimes, but with a bright starry night sky.
