Dolpo to Mugu and Rara Lake Trek is one of the ultimate adventures other than normal trekking around Nepal Himalayas. It is more of an exploration pioneering fresh virgin areas of Nepal’s Far North West. A complete sheer mountain wilderness in the harmony of serene, isolated regions. Around the least tramped areas by foreign travelers that leads you to wild mountainous country.

The first phase of the adventure leads you around Dolpo and Shey Gompa to picturesque Phoksundo Lake. Trekking within Nepal’s largest Shey Phoksundo National Park enriched rare exotic flora and fauna. The route follows spectacular mountain scenery with crystal clear mountain lakes, ancient monasteries and remote traditional villages. The mountainous paths are vague and narrow in some sections of the trek. Only an expert guide can lead you through the high mountain pass safely and securely. Making these adventures Dolpo to Mugu and Rara Lake trek as one of the most exciting and mesmerizing to experience.

After a great pleasant time at Ringmo Village and Phoksundo Lake, adventure heads higher crossing the first high pass. Nangdalo-La or Kang-La Pass to an isolated and sacred place at Shey Gompa, also known as Crystal Monastery.
In the close shadow of Shey or Crystal Mountain nearby embedded with semi-precious stones and crystals.

Enjoying a pleasant time at Shey Monastery and its dramatic scenery of mountainous landscapes and terrains of Dolpo. Adventure continues towards our ultimate destination to Mugu and Rara, the largest lake of Nepal.

The trek leads further north-west to Bhijer, where our route branches off from the main trail. Exploring remote and isolated country of Nepal’s Wild West, traversing over high passes. As the walk continues through the deep gorges of the Mugu area with quaint sleepy few villages. Rarely visited by the locals and outside visitors, and crossing the highest pass of the adventure
Nyingma Gyalzen-La.

Offers stupendous vista of the wild-west with giant snow-capped peaks, then enters towards our final destination. Reaching Mugu district and the country’s largest Rara Lake surrounded by a beautiful green forest of pines, firs and spruce trees. Having time to explore around the scenic lake of Rara, slowly our adventurous trek ends at Talcha Village.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to a hotel.

On arrival at Kathmandu and Nepal Intenational Airport, after visa formalities, and claiming the baggage. Outside the exit terminal our staff and guide receives you for a short transfer to the hotel. After getting refreshed at the hotel, then join with other members of Dolpo to Mugu and Rara Lake Trek briefing.
Full information of the treks, including hotels in Kathmandu/ Nepalgunjnlocal cultures with do’s and don’ts. In the evening a lovely dinner and introduction to Nepali foods and culture.

Day 2: Tour of Kathmandu heritage sites of great interest.
Moning after breakfast, our city guide takes you on a tour around thenworld heritage sites within Kathmandu city. After an exciting and interesting tour back to the hotel, preparation and packing for trekking. Non-essential clothing and items not required for treks, can be stored in the Hotel or with Kirat Society Adventure.
Day 3: Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj & transfer to a Hotel. 

As time for Nepalgunj, transfer to the domestic airport for an hour scenic flight to Nepalgunj. At Nepalgunj, ample time to explore the westen Terai city of Nepalgunj. The people of southen Nepal have strong Indian influence and cultures due to the border close to India.

Day 4: Fly from Nepalgunj to Jhupal (Dolpo) 2,320m. Trek to Dunai 2,850m.

From Nepalgunj, early moning drive to the airport for a 40-minute flight to Jhupal over the Himalayan foothills. Enjoy the views of West Dhaulagiri peaks with a range of Snow Mountains. Reaching at Jhupal our trekking staff will receive you, who have traveled overland all the way from Kathmandu and Nepalgunj.
Carrying the camping gear and food supply for the whole treks of more than two weeks. At Jhupal a few hours walk from the airstrip towards our ovenight stops at Dunai. The headquarters town of Dolpo districts, transfer to a simple lodge for refreshing dinner and ovenight.

Day 5: Trek to Chhepka 2,838 m - 06 hrs.
From Dunai, moning walk leads past market place and then crosses a bridge over Thulo Bheri River. Climb over a ridge above Phoksundo River valley with views of Kagmara peak. After a pleasant walk, our route heads downhill past farm villages within walnut trees close to Dhera. A small cattle herder’s settlement, from here a short climb towards Raha Gaon village of Thakuri a Hindu tribe. Walk from here downhill into forested area to reach our first ovenight camp at Chhepka, a small farm village.
Day 6: Trek to Samduwa village 2,960m -06 hrs. 

After Chhepka which is close to Ankhe village, the moning walk starts with a short climb and descent. Walk through the forest of pines, spruce and fir trees to the river bank, and then climb. On leaving the forest behind and then downhill back into the forested area. The route follows upstream to cross a small bridge at Ryajik village, trek leads further to Samduwa for ovenight stop. Situated close to the entrance of Phoksundo National Park.

Day 7: Trek to Ringmo Gaon 3, 733 m at Phoksundo Lake- 05 hrs.

The moning walk leads to our first destination and highlights Ringmo Village by the picturesque Phoksundo Lake. The walk follows Pungmo Khola (stream) around the valley downhill through pine and birch trees. Reaching the upper side of Phoksundo Khola. After a short break walk to Ringmo village, an interesting village of Tibetan origin culture with mud plastered Chorten and Mani (prayer) walls of Bon sect and Buddhist religion. From here a short walk to Phoksundo Lake for ovenight camp near the shore of scenic and turquoise colored Phoksundo Lake.

Day 8: Rest day at Phoksundo Lake for local excursion.

A perfect spot for a rest day, marvel the beautiful views of dramatic country with its scenic landscapes. Views of Kagmara peaks, have time to explore around Ringmo village of immense cultural interest of Tibetan Buddhism.

Day 9: Trek to Phoksundo-Khola 3,750 m- 05 hrs.

From here moning walk leads to the upper Dolpo region.
The walk leads beyond Phoksundo Lake on leaving the Lower Dolpo and Ringmo Village. The route leads to a rocky ledge over a river bank on an unsteady path towards the west side of the lake. Walk through a summer pasture which opens into a wide plain of Phoksundo Khola/ stream for ovenight camp by the shore.

Day 10: Trek to Phoksundo Bhanjyang 4,717 m - 04 hrs. 

Moning trek begins on a good path leading north above Phoksundo Khola.
As the walk progresses heading up towards a hill, after a steep climb reaching the ridge top. Offers grand views of the wide green valley with Kang-La pass en route to Shey Gompa. Our ovenight camp is set on a nice green pasture at the base of Kang-la pass amidst complete wildeness.

Day 11: Cross Kang-La 5,350 m and trek to Shey Gompa 4,160 m -06 hrs.

Moning walk starts towards our ovenight destination at Shey Gompa.
One of the highlight of the adventure after Phoksundo Lake, climb continuesnon a stone and rocky path. After a few hours of steady climb, reaching the top of Kang-la pass at 5,350 meters / 17,655 feet.

The pass offers spectacular views of surrounding landscapes with snow clad peaks including Mt. Dhaulagiri towards east. After an enjoyable scenic moment, a long descent to the bottom of the pass reaches by the river. Walk across cattle herder camps towards Buddhist prayer monuments of Chorten and Mani.

From here a nice walk leads to our final destination at Shey Gompa located beneath the Crystal Mountain. Regarded as a Holy Mountain with an old monastery nearby.

Day 12: Rest day at Shey Gompa, the crystal monastery.

A beautiful place for a rest day around isolated and remote of Westen Himalaya.
It is one of the most hidden places away from moden civilization in the harmony of complete wildeness. Have time to explore these amazing areas, visit thenold Shey Gompa also called Crystal Monastery. More information about this area is well described in the famous 1980's classic novel 'Snow Leopard' by American author Peter Matthiessen.

Day 13: Trek to Taro 4,300 m-06 hours walks.

Starting the moning walk with a steep climb at above 4,800 m ridges.
From the top enjoy the commanding glorious views of Karo Himal with Yaja peak 5,900 m. The views extend further south west of Kanjirawa Himal with groups of peaks. Includes Chokarpo 6,058 m, Tsho Kalpo Kang 6,556 m and Serku Dholma 6,227 m. After a refreshing rest on top then downhill to Taro at the height of 4,300 m for ovenight camp. Located in a small, windswept valley with isolated cattle herder’s settlement.

Day 14: Trek to Bhijer 3,850 m -05 hrs.

The adventure continues heading towards Mugu, from Taro there is a direct, steep road to Bhijer (about 2 hours). It is a lovely walk and longer through the village of Tata, of about 15 families. Walking further visit the Shyamling Gompa, thenBon monastery of 900 years old history. Once a year a fair / festival is held in the month of November or early December. As per the Tibetan Buddhism Lunar calendar marking the auspicious day / events.

Time permitting tour of Shyamling Gompa at the height of 4,120 m, after Shyamling few hours of nice walks to Bhijer. Have time to visit another interesting old monastery of Bonpa sect (pre Buddhist religions).
The Bon culture is similar to North American natives / Inwiks and Laplanders.
The way of practice and worship of nature and mountain spirits.

Nearby is a place called Sumdo with a primary school built by French assistance (this area is well covered and pictured in the movie Caravan later changed to Himalaya, a French and Nepal venture movie). At Bhijer camp is set on a nice meadow close to the village.

Day 15: Trek to Pho village at 4,100 m. Via Yambur La Pass 4,813 m-07 hrs.

After a pleasant ovenight stay at Bhijer moning, a short walk reaches Phu Gaon.
Our route heads towards Lang Khola (stream) with gradual up then reachesnat the base of Yambur-La. A nice grazing pasture, from here climb to the ridge top of Yambur-La pass 4,813 m high. Facing superb views of Kanjirawa Himal Mountain ranges. A short descent to the base then walks to Pho-Kharka by the Tora Khola at 4,070 m. Located beneath the Yambur Danda ridge, after a short break for possible lunch. Aftenoon a few hours of good walk to Pho for an ovenight camp. A small settlement with a Chorten (religious monument) withna small monastery.

Day 16: To Phung Kharka 4,650 m via Nyingma Gyalzen-La 5,560 m-8 hrs.

On leaving the village of Pho, enjoy facing dramatic mountain scenery.
This area is one of the most isolated areas in the whole of Nepal.
The path is hardly trekked by foreign travelers, all required to follow the lead guide. Around this adventurous routes to Phung Kharka the long and steadynnclimbs reach you on top Nyingma Gyalzen-La Pass. The highest pass and spot of our jouney at 5,560-meter-high. This pass is also considered one of the finest in Nepal, where this is of course very subjective. After enjoying the view, descend towards a gorge of Swaksa Khola/Stream. Quite an exhausting day walk, slowly the day ends on reaching Phung Kharka.

Day 17: Trek to Chyandi Khola 4,800 m crossing Yala La Pass 5,400 m-06 hrs.
Moning walk leads into a gorge of Swaksa Khola for an hour and then leaving the stream behind with a steep climb to Yala-La pass top at 5,414m high offering views of Palchung Homga Himal range of peaks and Mariyong glacier towards North direction bordering with South West Tibet with Yala Kang 5,745 m peak nearby. Descend towards pastureland reaching at Chyandi Khola following the stream for a while to our ovenight camp on a nice meadow facing Yala Kang peak.
Day 18: Trek to Thajuchaur 4,050 m. via Chyargo-La 5,150 m. -07 hrs.

After a nice ovenight in the middle of nowhere at Chyandi Khola area, moning lads downhill to a river gorge of Kajtpachonam Khola joining with Chyandi Khola after a short descend between the ridge of Changdi Lekh and Maksya Danda, crossing the stream with a steep climb for an hour and then on gradual path to reach at Takla Khola around 3,785 m high, after a rest here continue walk with a long climb to the top of Chyargo-La pass at 5,150 m with stunning views of surrounding peaks and dramatic landscapes. From downhill for a while and then a short climb up to Thajuchaur for ovenight stop at 4,050 m high.

Day 19: Trek to Shilenchaur 2,950 m. 06 hrs.

After days walking around the high altitude areas, today our route leads deeper and warmer climates. Today's destination is Shilenchaur, situated at an altitude of 2,950 meters, at the confluence of Chham and Mugu Khola/ Streams.
From this nice spot time permitting, take a side trip towards a river gorge of Mugu Khola. To Uri Gompa or close to it, as this northen route leads to Mugu Gompa following the river gorge.

Day 20: Trek to Tiyar 2,418 m - 05 hrs. Following Mugu Karnali River.
From here into Mugu areas on leaving the upper Dolpo district, walk today follows Mugu Nadi (River). A pleasant, gradual walk most of the way downhill to reach Tiyar village. Enjoy the ovenight stop, back into tree-lines of oaks-juniper, pines with rhododendron trees and bushes.
Day 21: Trek and enter Mugu at Mangri 1,950 m-06 hrs.

The moning walks lead through more farm villages within a lovely surrounding of well-maintained terraces. The crops of wheat-barley-buckwheat and rice around lower areas. Enjoy the walk on a gentle downhill trail past the villages of Ghobutusa-Chheusathan and Dhungedhara. Then the day completes, reaching a nice village at Mangri for an ovenight camp.

Day 22: Trek to Gamgadhi 2,950 m and transfer to a lodge- 06 hrs.

After Mangri village walk follows Mugu Kanali Nadi (River) most of the way. The route heads through a forest of spruce-pines and fir trees passing the villages of Lusa and Lumsa. Finally, the day ends reaching Gamgadhi town located at the entrance of Nepal largest Rara Lake. Also known as Mahindra Tal (after former and late King Mahindra). Gamgadhi town with banks-small hotels-lodge, post office and health post. It is located at the junctions of various routes of Westen Nepal. The northen route leads to upper Mugu at Simikot, westward of Rara Lake towards Khaptad and southen route to Jumla town.

Day 23: Trek to Rara 2,990 m the largest Lake of Nepal-05 hrs.

From Gamgadhi, moning walk on winding and gradual trail through several farmnnareas and villages. A pleasant walk amidst lovely forest, and then route divertsnnfrom the main trail to Rara Lake. After a pleasant walk with few ups and downsnnreaching near the shores of Rara Lake. Check into a nice lodge, managed by the

Rara National Park. Aftenoon explore the beautiful and serene Rara Lake, as thenncolor of the lake changes along with the sun lights.

Day 24: Free day at Rara Lake for local excursions.

Enjoy a free day around this scenic spot at Rara Lake. After breakfast our localnnguide will take you for a short hike at vantage view-point. Climb to the observation tower for best views of the Rara Lake and its beautiful surroundings.

Outlined with rolling green hills and snowcapped mountain range, rest of the daynnat leisure and marvel at the picturesque scenery.

Day 25: Trek to Talcha 2,265 m and transfer to a lodge-06 hrs.

After an enjoyable time at Rara Lake, the retun jouney leads on the lower trail.
Walking with short steep ups and down into dense forest past farm villages.
After a pleasant hike, it leads to Talcha via near Gamgadhi Town.
Ovenight in a nice simple lodge before heading back to Kathmandu

Day 26: Fly to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj and transfer to a hotel.

Moning walk to small Talcha Airport, as time for flight to Nepalgunj, bid farewell to the local staff. As the small aircraft reach Talcha airstrip parking.
Then get on board in a small aircraft for a short scenic flight to Nepalgunj facing views of Westen Himalaya range of peaks. From Nepalgunj airport connecting flights to Kathmandu on a bigger plane for an exciting flight back to Kathmandu. On arrival at Kathmandu airport, transfer to your hotel.

Day 27: Free and contingency day or enjoy individual activities.

A free or Contingency day in case of flight delay before and after the treks.
If all goes well according to our itinerary days, enjoy a free day for shopping onjoin for another tour to Patan and Bhaktapur, worth a visit not to be missed.

Day 28: International departure for homeward bound.

Last day in Nepal and at Kathmandu, get ready for final departure as per your intenational flight time. Our guide and staff transfer you to the airport.
