Lower Dolpo and Phoksundo Trek, an exceptional adventure to Nepal’s Wild West around picturesque locations. Trekking within the country’s largest Shey & Phoksundo National Park enriched with rare species of flora and fauna.

Around the country where elusive mountain wildlife dwells, the shy and beautiful snow leopard and herds of Blue Sheep. The route follows through lovely isolated villages enriched with age-old traditional cultures of Buddhism and Bon religions.

Truly a wonderful adventure to experience, where the walk takes you to turquoise colored lake at Phoksundo. Exploring the remote villages of Ringmo, Dho Tarap to Tarakot adorned with ancient Tibetan heritages and old monasteries of great religious and historical interest.

Lower Dolpo and Phoksundo Trek, begins with a sweeping flight towards Nepal Far West at Jhupal. The adventure continues through nice villages lined with Buddhist prayer walls in the shade of towering Snow Mountains.

The route leads to high scenic ridges amidst lovely forest of pines, firs and spruce to Phoksundo Lake. Situated close to Ringmo Village, after a pleasant time around Phoksundo Lake, adventure follows towards a wild country.
Far from human habitation and settlements for some days, traversing over high Baga-La and Namun-La Passes. Reaching at the scenic valley and village of Dho-Tarap on the old Trans Himalayan Salt Trade Route of Nepal and Tibet.

The walk follows the scenic Tarap River Valley towards the historical village of Tarakot. From Tarakot slowly the trek leads you to Dunai, the headquarters town of Dolpo. The last section of the adventure reaches you at Jhupal for an exciting panoramic flight back to Kathmandu. After a great wonderful experience and adventure on “Lower Dolpo and Phoksundo Trek”.

Itinerary

Day1: Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to a hotel.

On arrival at Kathmandu and Nepal Intenational Airport, after visa formalities, and claiming the baggage. Outside the exit terminal our staff and guide receives you for a short transfer to the hotel. After getting refreshed at the hotel, then join with other members of Lower Dolpo Trek briefing. Full information of the treks, including hotels in Kathmandu/ Nepalgunj local cultures with do’s and don’ts.
In the evening a lovely dinner and introduction to Nepali foods and culture.

Day2: Tour of Kathmandu heritage sites of great interest.
Moning after breakfast, our city guide takes you on a tour around thenworld heritage sites within Kathmandu city. After an exciting and interesting tour back to the hotel, preparation and packing for trekking. Non-essential clothing and items not required for treks, can be stored in the Hotel or with Kirat Society Adventure.
Day3: Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj & transfer to a Hotel. 

As time for Nepalgunj, transfer to the domestic airport for an hour scenic flight to Nepalgunj. At Nepalgunj, ample time to explore the westen Terai city of Nepalgunj. The people of southen Nepal have strong Indian influence and cultures due to the border close to India.

Day4: Fly from Nepalgunj to Jhupal (Dolpo) 2,320m. Trek to Dunai 2,850m.

From Nepalgunj, early moning drive to the airport for a 40-minute flight to Jhupal over the Himalayan foothills. Enjoy the views of West Dhaulagiri peaks with a range of Snow Mountains. Reaching at Jhupal our trekking staff will receive you, who have traveled overland all the way from Kathmandu and Nepalgunj.
Carrying the camping gear and food supply for the whole treks of more than two weeks. At Jhupal a few hours walk from the airstrip towards our ovenight stops at Dunai. The headquarters town of Dolpo districts, transfer to a simple lodge for refreshing dinner and ovenight.

Day5: Trek to Chhepka 2,838 m - 06 hrs.
From Dunai, moning walk leads past market place and then crosses a bridge over Thulo Bheri River. Climb over a ridge above Phoksundo River valley with views of Kagmara peak. After a pleasant walk, our route heads downhill past farm villages within walnut trees close to Dhera. A small cattle herder’s settlement, from here a short climb towards Raha Gaon village of Thakuri a Hindu tribe. Walk from here downhill into forested area to reach our first ovenight camp at Chhepka, a small farm village.
Day6: Trek to Samduwa village 2,960m -06 hrs. 

After Chhepka which is close to Ankhe village, the moning walk starts with a short climb and descent. Walk through the forest of pines, spruce and fir trees to the river bank, and then climb. On leaving the forest behind and then downhill back into the forested area. The route follows upstream to cross a small bridge at Ryajik village, trek leads further to Samduwa for ovenight stop. Situated close to the entrance of Phoksundo National Park.

Day7: Trek to Ringmo Gaon 3, 733 m at Phoksundo Lake- 05 hrs.

The moning walk leads to our first destination and highlights Ringmo Village by the picturesque Phoksundo Lake. The walk follows Pungmo Khola (stream) around the valley downhill through pine and birch trees. Reaching the upper side of Phoksundo Khola. After a short break walk to Ringmo village, an interesting village of Tibetan origin culture with mud plastered Chorten and Mani (prayer) walls of Bon sect and Buddhist religion. From here a short walk to Phoksundo Lake for ovenight camp near the shore of scenic and turquoise colored Phoksundo Lake.

Day8: Rest day at Phoksundo Lake for local excursion.

A perfect spot for a rest day, marvel the beautiful views of dramatic country with its scenic landscapes. Views of Kagmara peaks, have time to explore around Ringmo village of immense cultural interest of Tibetan Buddhism.

Day9: Trek to Timche 3,995 m base of Baga-La Pass - 05 hrs.

From Phoksundo Lake and the nice village of Ringmo, the route leads towards remote areas within mountain wildeness. Far from villages and human settlements for a few days, except for some Yak herder’s camps. Moning walk follows the base of Baga-La and Numa-La Passes. The route follows south amidst dense forest, then reaching a yak herder summer pastures with shelters at Timche. The ovenight camp is at the base of Baga-La pass, around the remote area of Timche.

Day10: Cross Baga-La 5,169 m and trek to Danigar 4,512 m -06 hrs.

Start early in the moning after a good breakfast for the long day to cross Baga-La, the first high pass of the adventure. The climb starts with a steep up following ridge lines all the way to the top of Baga-La. For the hard effort, rewards with marvelous views of Phoksundo Lake, Kagmara and Kanjirawa peaks.
After a refreshing scenic stop, then downhill on the other side of Baga-La for ovenight camp. Setting the camp on a nice meadow known as Danigar a Yak herder’s camp and shelter.

Day11: Cross over Numa-La pass 5, 190 m and camp at 4,440 m -05 hrs.

Another last pass to cross and the highest point of the adventure, after breakfast a short gradual walk. Then reach the base of Numa-La pass, start the climb of a few hours to the top of Numa-La Pass. On reaching the highest spot, enjoy the dramatic scenery facing views of snow-capped peaks with beautiful landscapes.
Includes views as far as Dhaulagiri Himal range towards east, after an exciting scenic view downhill to the base of Numa-La for ovenight camping.

Day12: Trek to Dho-Tarap 3, 944 m- 05 hrs.

Enjoying time around pure wildeness, from here walking back to the villages.
Moning starts on a gradual winding path. The walk follows through tall blue pine and fir trees. Enjoy the pleasant walk on a winding path, reaching a wide open area at Tarap Chu River. Then a short walk towards a large village of Dho Tarap inhabited by a mixed mountain tribe of Tibetan origin. As well as Magar people the main hill tribes of westen Nepal. Ovenight camp near the village farm land, with time to explore the village and monastery.

Day13: Trek to Gyagar 3,759 m - 07 hrs.

Leaving Dho Tarap, moning starts towards a wide Tarap Valley, then following the Tarap Chu River. As it joins the Thuli Bheri River near Tarakot village, the route leads to an interesting gorge of Langa. A place with beautiful waterfalls, from here to Sisal and Kesila. A small area of Yak herder’s temporary shelter to set up our ovenight camp. This camping area is called Gyagar, an isolated place within a river gorge.

Day14: Trek to Tarap Khola 3,652 via Chhyugar 3,440 m - 06 hrs.

From here an exciting walk to the end of Tarap valley, the wide valley tuns to a narrow gorge. The walk leads to a small path with little vegetation and wild rose bushes. The trek continues to reach a place with a large overhanging cave, this place is called Toltol. Chances of spotting some wildlife, like mountain goats and sheep. The walk continues reaching the confluence of Tarap Chu and Lang Khola River. The ovenight camp is set close to the river after a long and interesting walk of the day.

Day15: Trek to Tarakot 2,540 m - 06 hrs.

The adventure slowly comes to a near end, the moning walk follows through isolated farms and forested areas. Then walk by the river banks with the last climb to Tarakot. A large village with historical background of Malla Kingdom regime.
This village and a fortress, used to collect tax from the merchants who used this ancient Trans Himalaya Salt Trade Route. Tarakot is an interesting village to explore around. After setting the camp, visit the old Sandul Gompa located on the junction of Barbung Khola and Tarap Chu River.

Day16: Trek to Dunai 2,140 m 4 hours, drive to Jhupal 2,475 m - 02 hrs.

Enjoy the last day trek, the moning walk follows to Dunai, the major town and headquarters of Dolpo. The walk to Dunai of a few hours, on reaching the large town of Dunai for lunch stop. Then taking the comfort of a short few hour drive to Jhupal. For the last ovenight in Dolpo and Far Westen Nepal, at Jhupal accommodation in a nice simple lodge.

Day17: Fly to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj and transfer to a hotel.

As time for the flight to Nepalgunj, bidding farewell to trekking staff and mule driver porters. Moning a short walk to Jhupal airport, as the small aircraft reach Jhupal airstrip parking. Then get on board in a small aircraft for a short scenic flight to Nepalgunj facing views of Westen Himalaya range of peaks.

From Nepalgunj airport connecting flights to Kathmandu on a bigger plane for an exciting flight back to Kathmandu. On arrival at Kathmandu airport, transfer to your hotel.

Day18: Free and contingency day or enjoy individual activities.

A free or Contingency day in case of flight delay before and after the treks.
If all goes well according to our itinerary days, enjoy a free day for shopping onjoin for another tour to Patan and Bhaktapur, worth a visit not to be missed.

Day19: International departure for homeward bound.

Last day in Nepal and at Kathmandu, get ready for final departure as per your intenational flight time. Our guide and staff transfer you to the airport.
Bidding farewell to the guide and staff as you depart for a homeward bound flight, after a wonderful experience and adventure around Lower Dolpo and Phoksundo Trek.
